A Taste of the Tropics in Historic York: New Rum & Chocolate Tours Launched

Chocolate & Rum Tasting at York's Chocolate Story

If you’ve ever dreamed of sipping rum under the Caribbean sun while nibbling on rich, velvety chocolate, York’s Chocolate Story is bringing that dream a little closer to home – no passport required.

After the success of the Gin & Chocolate Tours, which, since the launch last year have delighted hundreds of guests, York’s Chocolate Story is turning up the heat with a brand-new Rum & Chocolate Tour. This decadent experience invites guests to explore the rich roots, and histories of two indulgent favourites: rum and chocolate.

What to Expect

Set in the heart of York’s historic centre, these immersive, 90-minute tours run every other Thursday and offer an unforgettable flavour journey in collaboration with the renowned Hooting Owl Distillery – the only distillery within York’s ancient city walls.

You’ll be guided through a curated tasting of five premium rums, each paired perfectly with delicious chocolates. Along the way, expert guides share the fascinating backstories of both rum and chocolate – from their origins in Central America and the Caribbean, to their cultural journeys to modern-day York.

The Tasting Line-Up

Here’s a little preview of what to expect:

Mocha Rum – A dark-looking but actually white rum infused with the comforting notes of chocolate, coffee, and toasted marshmallow.

Coconut Rum – A smooth, spiced cane rum bursting with tropical coconut, allspice berries, and vanilla.

Tipsy Toad Dark Rum – A bold, spicy dark rum made with hawthorn berries, sarsaparilla, and tonka beans – perfect for cocktails.

Hooting Owl Dark Rum – A smooth artisan rum made from Guyanese spirits and a secret blend of botanicals.

Mystery Rum – A surprise final tasting to end your experience on a high note!

Chocolate-Making

As if sipping rum and sampling chocolate weren’t enough, the tour ends with a hands-on chocolate-making session. You’ll get to pipe your very own chocolate bar and watch a live chocolatier demonstration, complete with rum-filled chocolates.

Why Rum and Chocolate?

Both rum and chocolate share more than just great taste – they share roots. Grown side by side in tropical climates, these two flavours have rich histories shaped by trade, craftsmanship, and culture. Stuart Wood, General Manager at York’s Chocolate Story, puts it best:

“Chocolate and rum have so much in common-from their flavour profiles to their cultural roots-this pairing feels like a natural next step in our offering.”

A Local Partnership with Global Flavour

This new experience wouldn’t be possible without the continued collaboration with Hooting Owl Distillery. Founder Dominic M’Benga says:

“Hooting Owl is all about history and flavour, so what better partner in the city of York, a city built on chocolate. You are guaranteed to have a hoot!”

Ready to Taste for Yourself?

The Rum & Chocolate Tours begin on Thursday 19th June, and run fortnightly. Whether you’re looking for the perfect date night in York, or an evening out with friends, this tour is sure to be a deliciously memorable experience.
